Something I’ve noticed? If someone has always known you one way, they don’t want you to be anything else. Take Doja Cat, for example. The world knew her as the super feminine Doja Cat, dancing in sequins and cute wigs. When she shaved off her hair and brows and embraced a more eclectic fashion taste, some fans begged for the “old Doja” to return. Doja’s not the only celebrity to be pushed by fans to “return to form”. It’s happened with Chloe Bailey, Janelle Monae, Ari Lennox, and more.
The same can be said for everyday people, too. Have you ever been afraid to try a new style, cut your hair, or show off a new hobby because you didn’t want the line of questioning that follows debuting something new? I’ve definitely been there. And while it’s sometimes a bummer to hear that someone prefers an older, erm younger, version of me, it’s freeing to be able to hear those things and still choose to do what makes me happy.
You’re allowed to change. Switch up how you dress. Change your demeanor. Read new books. Be a different person if you want to. You don’t have to stay the same to make anyone comfortable or happy. My favorite stories are from people who have completely flipped their lives upside down and now find joy in something no one expected from them. Life is long and bizarre. How can you not change over time? Don’t let anyone shame you back into a cocoon you’ve already emerged from. If they can’t stand the sight of the new you, they can just look at something else.
Examples of rebrands I find fascinating:
Jordan Peele and Childish Gambino switching from comedy to respected film and TV!
In my upcoming novel, How to Escape Death, Mona Kitt is struggling with her own rebrand. Unfortunately, because she fights against embracing her true self, it all comes back to bite her. She finds herself grappling with choices a younger Mona made that led her to where she’s at now…doomed. Although this is a sequel to my first novel, it’s also a stand-alone story about grief, regret, and redemption!
Mona Kitt has it all. A high-powered job at Kline Turner Solutions. Expensive taste. A revolving door of suitors. And…the ability to see the future.
This has, of course, afforded her the luxury of staying three steps ahead of everyone around her. She sees future lovers, future opportunities, and future scandals to use as blackmail fodder. But unfortunately for Mona, she also sees Death, and she's in a race against time to save her soul. Can she confront the past to change her future?
There are a limited number of signed hardcover pre-order slots left! Once these are printed, I will not be re-opening pre-orders like I did with How to Be a Better Adult. I’m trying to avoid overwhelm 😅
