Megan Thee Stallion, Coraline, & Dealing With Fake Kindness.
"Everything that grin ain't your friend"
Megan Thee Stallion’s been through so much in the last few years. Losing her mother, being betrayed by friends in the worst ways, and being shot in the foot by someone she trusted…then watching the world doubt her truth for years. It’s no wonder she spiraled into a deep depression, which she details in her song Cobra.
Breaking down and I had the whole world watching
But the worst part is really who watched me?
Every night I cried, I almost died
And nobody close tried to stop me
Long as everybody getting paid, right?-Megan Thee Stallion, Cobra
Anyway, I was listening to Megan Thee Stallion’s recent interview with Shannon Sharpe, and she said something that really stood out to me:
“Everything that grin ain’t your friend.”
What a powerful and, unfortunately, true statement. I was immediately reminded of times when I’ve been sincere, not knowing the other person had ulterior motives (something my main character, Hope, goes through in How to Be a Better Adult). Then I thought of Coraline.
Earlier this year, we read Coraline in my Weird Book Club, and if you’re unfamiliar with the story, young Coraline has moved into a new house with her parents. They ignore her bids for attention, and she grows bored with her existence. So, when she finds herself crawling through a magical door to an alternate reality nearly identical to her own, of course she’s excited! However, she’s met with a widely smiling version of her mother with buttons where her eyes should be.
This “other mother” promises her the world. Delicious foods, endless games, and loads of attention—everything Coraline desires. But, as is usually the case, it’s all too good to be true.
Like Coraline, Megan thee Stallion was met with deceptively wide smiles during a vulnerable time. She was a rising star who’d lost what she loved the most, and people were clamoring to get close and take advantage of that. One of those people shot her in the foot. One publicly humiliated her. Another made statements against her. All after getting what they wanted from her.
I usually try to approach these topics with a lesson or advice that I’ve learned. But when it comes to this one, as an autistic woman, I’m still trying to figure it out myself. It also seems like Megan thee Stallion is trying her best to learn, navigate, and deal as well. Maybe the key is to be guarded as you move through life. But, you run the risk of missing out on legitimate connections. Ah, a conundrum.
When it comes to Coraline? She tore the whole reality down…as she should!
