Life, death, and...eggs?
How Wonder Egg Priority inspired me to think about my personal monsters
In Wonder Egg Priority, a young girl (Ai) is struggling with grief and finds a mysterious machine dispensing “wonder eggs”. She buys one. After being transported to a dream-like dimension, the egg cracks open—revealing another girl inside. Ai is then tasked with protecting the egg-girl by battling horrifying monsters.
But these aren’t your average everyday monsters. Ai, and her new friends, learn that each girl housed in each egg has died by suicide, and the monsters are physical representations of the trauma and abusive people that caused it. They’re told if they save enough girls, they can reset the universe and bring them back from the dead. So, they fight.
I love magical girl influences paired with a darker tone, but what sets Wonder Egg Priority apart, to me, is the tackling of suicide and trauma. I’ve never watched anything like it. I was especially moved by the depiction of the monsters.
In my self-help book, The Magical Girl’s Guide to Life, I took a similar approach, describing my own personal adversaries as The Anxiety Monster and the Duke of Despair.
My personal monsters have also chased me to the brink of death. Licking their chops, salivating over my trembling anxious body. But, similar to Wonder Egg Priority, I had friends and family who came to my rescue.
We’re All Eggs
All of us are eggs. We’re safe and sound in the right container/environment. But we’re fragile and easily broken when mishandled. And even still, we can be made beautiful again in another form.
If your personal monsters have broken you, remember that you can always transform. Like a magical girl emerging from a shower of sparkles and hearts. Or like an egg, cooked to perfection. You could become an omelet if you want, or you could be served sunny-side-up.
I’m in the middle of my own transformation. From a toxic relationship and being surrounded by people who broke me—to being happily yoked and having genuine friends and collaborators. It’s possible!
