Hey Sadgurls,
In case you’ve missed my constant online squeals of excitement—I’m writing the first ten issues of the new spooktacular Monster High comic series!
As an adult doll collector, being part of this iclawnic brand has truly been a dream come true. And as a resident Sadghoul, I’m pleased to say that nothing has or can knock my excitement for this opportunity! Having Monster High on my resume will always be insane to me, and I adore everyone working on this project. I love being able to write about my passions—dark undertones, heavy feelings, tough topics, and feminine characters.
You know what’s also a dream come true? Connecting with Monster High’s OG creator, Garrett Sander! There would be no Cleo, no Clawdeen, no Frankie without him! So I couldn’t go on and on about writing the series without giving flowers to the guy behind the ghouls. Luckily, Garrett was kind enough to chat with me about the New Scaremester and all things monstrous. And I want to share his answers with you!
Q. Hi Garrett! What are you most looking forward to when it comes to the new comic series?
Being back in the halls of Monster High and seeing all my favorite monsters haunting them! I know it’s exciting for so many of the fans, but Monster High is home for me, too, and I will always cherish any time I get to spend there!
You will always hear “no,” but if you believe in your idea, keep at it! Lots of people said no to Monster High and said it wouldn’t work. But we kept at it because we believed in it, and look at what it’s become!
Q. Absolutely love your passion for the world you created! Now, how do you feel about Clawdeen embracing her queer identity 🤩
Love it! I’m so happy to see the characters embrace themselves. It’s a better world when we all get to be our true monster selves!
Q. Did you read the Pride issue? How cute is Spelldon?
The cutest!! I am so glad he is making his debut. We hinted at him originally in Valentine’s diary but never went beyond that. It’s a full circle moment as he was among some of the original rough sketched characters - he just never made it into the line. But when we created Casta, I knew she had to have a brother! I hope we get a doll of him as well!!! The toy collector in me can’t help but want to put that out into the world!
Q. The ghouls are so iclawnic! How do you feel knowing your creativity created a movement that’s still going strong to this day?
It’s a scream come true! I never thought this little idea of teen monsters going to high school together would have turned into this monstrous brand! It’s such an honor to know MH means so much to so many people, and hearing about what it means from the fans is the very beast part of it all!
Q. You have a new doll line on the horizon! Tell us more about it 🤩
I couldn’t be happier to be working on my new concept: Gravestone Guardians! It combines some of my favorite things—monsters, obviously—and my love for epic fantasy worlds like He-Man and She-Ra! They were my favorite growing up! So I decided to build a world around them, where glamorous monster warriors battle to save their planet from the evil Queen Infestatia and her Swarm Army!
I am doing a crowdfund to hopefully make the first character, Vampire Warrior: Vampsyphone, as a 5.5 Actions Doll (in the style of vintage lines like She-Ra and Golden Girl and the Guardians of the Gemstones). I have a prototype, and I hope I get to make her for reals.
Q. Ahh I hope so too! Love how you continue to create new characters and concepts! Any words of encouragement for fellow creatives?
You will always hear “no,” but if you believe in your idea, keep at it! Lots of people said no to Monster High and said it wouldn’t work. But we kept at it because we believed in it, and look at what it’s become!
Thank you so much for the encouragement, Garrett! And for creating this amazing world. Looking forward to seeing what else you’ve got up your genius sleeves!
Are you a Monster High fan? Tell me why you love it!
Thank you!
I want to say whooaa, thank you to everyone who has upgraded their subscription. This newsletter continues to exist because of you! My ADHD mind tends to bounce around, but this Substack is the one avenue of expression that remains the same…even through all of the strange times.
I appreciate you all. And anyone who reads these updates. In a world where it’s easy to feel so alone, I feel seen by those of you who read, leave comments, email, and check in.
I don’t know what to give you (yet), but here are some TikToks and videos I’ve been into lately! Maybe you’ll like them too :)
When something’s for you…you won’t have to exchange your mental health to keep it.
Omg, I love her voice.
Wait…I want to read this now.
This neurosurgeon quit his job to live in the woods with his dog. His story is so inspiring.
I’m shadowbanned (or something) on Instagram after posting my thoughts on senseless violence. So please check it out and like and share anything you think is cool!
